Factory: A Unique Restaurant Inspired by Manufacturing

Creating a Run-Down Factory Atmosphere

Factory is a one-of-a-kind restaurant designed by Devesh Bhatia that draws inspiration from its name itself. The concept revolves around the theme of manufacturing and people working, creating a space that captures the essence of a run-down factory.

In a market saturated with microbreweries, Factory stands out as a place that not only serves beer but also manufactures it. Spread across four floors, the entire restaurant exudes the character of a worn-out factory. Every element, from the color palette to the wall textures and materials, is carefully curated to maintain the overall theme.

Transforming an existing building into Factory required extensive renovations. Numerous slabs had to be punctured and removed to create different levels, while mild steel was used to construct new sub-levels. Existing walls were scraped off to expose raw brickwork, which was then chiseled to achieve the desired texture.

The design specifications of Factory include the prominent use of mild steel sections and bent sheets throughout the space. The existing walls were intentionally left in a natural finish, allowing them to rust before being varnished to prevent further corrosion.

Factory is not just a visually stunning space; it also offers a unique dining experience. The entry points are located on opposite sides of the building, with the ground floor showcasing the open brew house and a shipping container that houses the kitchen. As guests move through the different levels, they are treated to visually connected sitting areas and an open atrium that houses the entire brewery. The basement exudes a cellar-like ambiance, while the first floor resembles a factory dining hall. Finally, the terrace incorporates natural elements such as plants and potted trees, creating a warm and inviting environment.

The Factory project was initiated in October 2015 and completed in March 2016 in Gurgaon, Haryana, India. During the design process, the team visited run-down factories to understand the overall look and feel of such spaces. This research helped them analyze the materials, textures, and colors commonly found in factories, which were then incorporated into the design of Factory.

One of the main challenges faced during the design process was the development of hardware and lighting fixtures using plumbing pipes and old liquor and whiskey bottles. However, the team overcame these obstacles, resulting in unique and creative elements that add to the overall aesthetic of Factory.

Factory has received recognition for its exceptional design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Hospitality, Recreation, Travel, and Tourism Design category in 2016. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that demonstrate outstanding creativity and resourcefulness, incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology. Factory's design not only showcases strong technical and creative skills but also contributes to improving the quality of life, making it a truly remarkable space.
